If you knew me before my 20’s, you knew Season 1 me. Season 1 was Indy and raw, grossly underfunded (not funded at all, to be honest), and the writers spent far too much time thinking about what Jane (Austen) would do. Season 1 Gwen was closer to Emma in character but Fanny Price in situation. If you knew me before my 30’s, you knew Season 2 me. Season 2 was Arthouse and dramatic, much better funded, but the writers might have been drunk and guided far too much by Hollywood ideals about love and romance than healthy ones, somewhere in the space of misguided attempts to fall in love made by the characters we never really like but far before we find out exactly how right we were. It’s was the true second volume (thanks, Jane)…
If you knew me before my 40’s, you knew Season 3 me. Season 3 was the dark and twisty of the wrong end of a docu-series true crime drama that was less entertaining than it seemed to be in the trailers. The regular writers were on vacation. There’s nothing more to be said…
Now I’m in Season 4… This is the comeback season which has come back full circle to Jane again but closer to the 3rd Volume where the bullshit from the last two Volumes somehow gets handled, the Villain’s true colors are shown, and the Heroine gets the Fella she’s been wondering about (silently in sentences the lengths of paragraphs for somewhere near 400 pages of vocabulary that makes one realize one doesn’t have the command over English one once thought one did) because it turns out he’s been yearning as much as she has and his situation either suddenly works itself out or he works it out because he grew in the last Volumes, too, both in love and in sense.
