It was all an illusion
Stepfordly so
The perfect couple
The happy family snapshots
When other people were around
The smoke and mirrors ruled
“I love you sweetheart,” was spoken
Coldly, without emotion,
The words were right
But the feeling behind them
Was completely wrong
But when there was
No one else around
The truth was painfully obvious
That there was no love
Not anymore
Perhaps not ever
And no bandaids could be applied
That would fix what was broken
Nothing could change what was
Nevertheless
They carried on day after day
Keeping up the illusion
