“One Flight Down” ~ The Sound of My Day

If you’ve been reading the last couple Sound of My Day posts from the last couple weeks, you’ve by now realized that I’m hitting my favorite songs from one of my all time favorite albums ever and the artist happens to be Norah Jones.

You all know that feeling you get when you can only barely hear some music drifting from somewhere nearby when you’re reaching to the edge of your ability to hear just to know what that familiar note is. How often is it that for the first few moments of that song it seems unknown, foreign, unfamiliar, until suddenly you realize it’s that song you know and have known forever and suddenly you’re no longer aching for the notes to come closer so you can hear them because you feel the song within you?

That song you hear broken notes of wafting through the open windows of your soul is the love you wanted but never pursued.

It’s the dream you never shared or chased.

It’s the person you long to be,

the person you yearn to be with,

the book you haven’t started yet,

the note you haven’t written,

and the words you haven’t spoken.

Will you leave that song on low somewhere in the distance or will you walk out the door to find it’s source and bask in the melodies there, finally making it your own?

“One Flight Down”

Norah Jones, Come Away With Me, 2002

Songwriter: Jesse Harris

One flight down
There’s a song on low
And your mind just picked up on the sound
Now you know that you’re wrong
Because it drifts like smoke
And it’s been there playing all along
Now you know
Now you know
The reeds and brass have been weaving
Leading into a single note
In this place
Where your arms unfold
Here at last I see your ancient face
Now you know
Now you know
The cadence rolls in broken
Plays it over and then goes
One flight down
There’s a song on low
And it’s been there playing all along
Now you know
Now you know
