“Say” ~ Sound of My Night

I woke the other morning from a dream and all I could remember was this song. Since then I’ve had this song playing in the background of my mind for the better part of a week, for which I can find no explanation as I didn’t actually own the or listen to the lyrics beyond the simple chorus until about an hour ago.

I like to think I always say the things I think and feel in this irritating, filter free, forward way I’ve got about me with truth, but it’s not always easy.

Some seem to always have the right words but the rest of us have a more difficult time finding words to say the things we really want to say, and some only ever feel like they accidentally find the right words at the right time.

Have you said what you need to say?

If the answer is not yes, it’s high time you get out there and say it.

If nothing is happening within the scope of the thing anyway, what’s the worst that could happen?

The best decisions of my life happened because I said what I was too shy to say anyway because the worst that could happen was nothing, which was exactly what was happening anyway.

So come on…

Say what you need to say.

Just say it.

“Say”

John Mayer, Say, 2007

Songwriter: John Mayer

Take all of your wasted honor

Every little past frustration

Take all of your so-called problems,

Better put ’em in quotations

Say what you need to say [8x]

Walking like a one man army

Fighting with the shadows in your head

Living out the same old moment

Knowing you’d be better off instead,

If you could only . . .

Say what you need to say [8x]

Have no fear for giving in

Have no fear for giving over

You’d better know that in the end

It’s better to say too much

Than never to say what you need to say again

Even if your hands are shaking

And your faith is broken

Even as the eyes are closing

Do it with a heart wide open (a wide heart)

Say what you need to say [24x]

  1. Mr. John Mayer. He delivers in the song department. Many of us have a hard time saying what we ‘need’ to. I tended to say what I wanted, no matter what. I did learn there was a time and place, and my words should be carefully chosen. You can say what you think, but you need to be ready for the consequence of those words. I still believe we should “say what you need to say.” Great post! Great song! Great message. 💜
