The Sound of My Day: “Summer Nights”

This weekend I will undoubtedly have something much deeper to share thank this but sometimes things don’t exactly end up where you think they will.

Memorial Day weekend is one of deep reflection and feeling in my world, yet I’m acutely aware of the fact that most outside the military community find it to be the magical beginning of summer. The appeal is not lost to me and, were I medically allowed to be, I would have been floating the river enjoying libations with friends today and laying out at some $5 camp spot enjoying more laughter and shenanigans tomorrow.

As I sat at the computer today dutifully working on my memoir’s manuscript, I found my mind wandering. The obvious solution to a writer such as myself is to plug into something that makes the words flow freely. So, headphones on and iTunes opened I discovered an album I had forgotten I downloaded a few days ago, one I’ve got in a box in the garage (I’m sure), when my nephew was diggin’ one of my favorite songs from it while we rocked out on the porch outside a distinctly Southern restaurant. “Sure,” I thought to myself, “why not?” Imagine my surprise when my focus diminished rather than improved… But can you blame me with a song like this?

I have a broad interest in music. If it makes me want to dance, makes me sing along, or makes me smile it ends up in my library. “Summer Nights” is one that does all three.

The year it was released I took a solo trip to Hawaii and drank too many umbrella clad cocktails with too many suntanned soldiers. I hit up some wicked music festivals when I got home between trips with my girlfriends to the beach in a Jeep with the roof and doors off, clad in our favorite bikinis, and singing along to our favorite songs of that summer. I lived on the Atlantic coast in Georgia and could never quite get rid of the sand in my apartment from those beach trips. Any left over days were spent laying in or around my pool with a mimosa (it’s mimOsa, not mimosA) and a book, again clad in bikinis and big hats. Every time I hear this song, I think of those days and a hundred magical nights around bonfires, on beaches or riverbanks, at dusk, at night, at the brink of dawn, surrounded by friends in places all around the South. While I love looking back at those memories, there is something new for this song with me.

I’ve spent the last six years stretched thin between being a caregiver for someone who was critically injured in combat, being all and doing all for everyone all the time, and falling into the world of chronic illness, disease, and amputation. In a way, I’ve been living in a long winter for all these years…

Until the spring happened shortly after I had my amputation. Life began to return. Things that I thought were dead began to show signs of life. Pieces of myself I’d forgotten existed suddenly began to spring forth from what seemed barren and dead. Little by little I began to grow and glow again as sunshine returned to my life and my Soul began to Shine. Now I am here at the cusp of my summer…

And I can’t wait to see what this summer brings!

“Summer Nights”

Rascal Flatts, Unstoppable, 2009

Songwriter: Mike Busbee, Brett James, & Gary Levox

Come on ladies
It’s time to pop that top
And fellas, I know you’re ready to rock
We went crazy cooped all winter long
And school is out, so let’s get it on
Flip flop tans and some white sand
I know the perfect spot
Well the sunset better set soon
So we can get in the mood
Things start getting all heated up
When it starts getting cool, yeah
Summer nights
Everybody, are you with me?
Let that igloo cooler mark your piece of paradise
Summer nights
Everybody’s feeling sexy
Holler if you’re ready for some summer nights
Now fellas, you better watch your step
Don’t let them teeny french bikinis
Make you loose your breath
Back to the ladies
Ya’ll keep doing ya’lls thing
Cause everything about you makes me wanna scream
The sun is getting low
There it goes, here we go
Here comes the moon, yeah
Things start getting all heated up
When it starts getting cool, yeah
Summer nights
Everybody, are you with me?
Let that igloo cooler mark your piece of paradise
Summer nights
Everybody’s feeling sexy
Holler if you’re ready for some summer nights
It’s a party down in,
Padre Big bonfire on the beach
It’s Coronas in Daytona y’all
Where it’s wild and it’s free
Summer nights
Everybody, are you with me?
Let that igloo cooler mark your piece of paradise
Summer nights
Everybody’s feeling sexy
Holler if you’re ready for some summer nights
Summer nights
Everybody, are you with me?
Let that igloo cooler mark your piece of paradise
Summer nights
Everybody’s feeling sexy
Holler if you’re ready for some summer nights
Yeah, oh are you ready?
Are you ready?
Are you ready?
For some summer nights
Yeah baby
Summer nights
It’s summer nights
Come on
